Γεννήθηκε το 1950 στην Ουάσινγκτον. Σπούδασε στα Πανεπιστήμια Tufts και το Juilliard. H πρώτη του κινηματογραφική εμφάνιση έγινε στην ταινία Altered States. Έχει προταθεί τέσσερις φορές για Όσκαρ και το κέρδισε για την ερμηνεία του στην ταινία Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Κέρδισε το πρώτο βραβείο Spencer Tracy από το UCLA το 1988.
